What is a mother made of? Where can you find her when she is not there?

These unifinished questions are the seed of Hilo (Thread) by Rocío Bueno, a personal reflection on the mother figure and the contradictions and uncertainty that lie at the heart of what we call motherhood. The artist delves deeply into how relations are built between mothers and daughters, and how the family and cultural heritage persists, latent, in all who have been and will be mothers.

But if the reflection on motherhood is the argument, below it there lie concepts like memories, the fragility of memory and the emotions. Bueno speaks to us of the fragmentary nature of memory and questions the family album as the storehouse of how things were.

So, the artist explores the limits of the photographic medium itself. In Hilo, photographs from the family archives converse with contemporary images, all united by a visceral red that acts as the thread that brings together the present, past and future. The superimposition of meanings and images also makes us think of what is latent, that which is there but is barely perceptible. A game between the visible and the invisible, the face and the obverse.

Hilo can be seen from 4 November to 4 December in Álbum, a festival of contemporary image and the photography in Terrassa.
