What is femininity? What is the ideal woman? How have women been represented throughout the history of art and why? These are some of the questions that lie behind the work Las nuevas Evas (The new Eves), from the artist Ana Becerra.
Throughout the history of art women have been represented from the standpoint of the patriarchy. This bias has favoured the interests of the dominant class and has facilitated the subjection of women. In this context, in the Middle Ages two feminine archetypes appeared that gained fundamental importance: Eve and Mary. Two odeals born from clerical thinking from which misogynistic dichotomy was constructed that has lived on to our own day: you are either a saint or a sinner.
In the audiovisual Las nuevas Evas, Ana Becerra challenges this model of representing women. Through dreamlike suggestive images she presents women who have been shown historically as sinners, determined women who dared to challenge the patriarchal society.
The project can been seen in the Las Carboneras space, of the National Museum of Science and Industry of Catalonia from 4 November to 3 December.
