A factory. A slaughterhouse. A power plant. Some shipyards. A gasometer. Architectural spaces, once industrial, that have been rescued from oblivion through cultural action.
Ruins you (don’t) see by Jorge Conde proposes a reflection on the role of the cultural institution in the construction of historical accounts, as well as in the recovery of memory and the critical analysis of the development model born of the Industrial Revolution and of the European colonial economic-productive system.
A dialogue with time and space. And a questioning of the prevailing models of recovery of the industrial legacy for defining cultural uses of the contemporary European city.
Over the course of more than a decade, the artist has traveled through 17 Western European countries, mapping old reused industrial spaces. Through his work, Conde analyzes how its transformation has changed the physiognomy of the territory and reflects on phenomena such as gentrification, speculation, the recovery of industrial heritage and the preservation of urban identity.
Ruins you (don’t) see is a research project carried out and produced with the support of Tabacalera Promoción del Arte, the Ministerio de Cultura y Deporte (MCD), VEGAP, the CoNCA (Generalitat de Catalunya) and the Real Academia de España in Rome
