In 2016, a young French woman created the hashtag #SiLesNoirsParlaientCommeLesBlancs to ridicule the commonplaces of racism and proposed to turn the focus of some very widespread phrases about black people to show the ridicule of these preconceived ideas.
Not much has changed in these years, and the same shameful, lacerating and ridiculous phrases continue to be heard. “Can you imagine an exhibition of a racialized person talking about whiteness?” asks Imanol Buisán, “Conversely, it is something totally accepted: a white person using blackness as an excuse to develop his discourse.”
This historical incongruity is the spark that has led to the exhibition Llegenda Blanca (White Legend). The artist does not intend to talk about colonialism, nor contextualize xenophobia, only to stop our gaze on some of its consequences today and, in this way, to generate questions that spur thinking.
Through experimentation with technique and always seeking to expand the limits of collage, Buisán observes with strangeness our patterns of behavior to discover the dynamics of unequal power and discrimination that sustain our society. Racial exclusion is one, but what if this augmented lens, this gap in speech allowed us to see also other realities such as gordophobia, apophobia, gerontofocy, phthbi-phobia or any other unequal relationship of power?
